Oven Baked Tortilla Chips: How to Make Your Own

Published on: Jan 29 2013 by WhiskeyBeard

These are probably the easiest things to make…but sometimes we need to be reminded of the simple things! Here’s a quick and easy recipe for homemade oven baked chips that may shrink your budget and waistline!

Just think. A bag of corn tortillas costs 2.50, and a bag of Tostidos is 3.40-4.00 . Your seasonings may cost a total of 5 cents.

That bag of Tostidos has 12o of chips. This batch will make roughly 80 chips, not using all the shells. If you made the whole bag, you’d get about 144 chips. Plus, there’s way less fat in these!

You don’t have to do the math to see this is a great deal. You’ll also know what you’re putting into these chips – no artificial sweeteners, additives, food coloring unless you choose to!

Oven Baked Tortilla Chips Recipe

Ingredients

  • 10  soft taco sized corn tortilla shells
  • olive oil or cooking spray (optional)
  • salt to taste (optional)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Cut your shells how ever you like. When done, place them on a cookie sheet about 1/4 of an inch a part. This is where you can play around with things. These will cook just fine with nothing added or you can enhance them.  You can also spray the sheet and chips with cooking oil, all up to you.

Bake in the oven for 8-12 minutes. You want them slightly crispy, but still a little chewy/flexible. They will continue to crisp outside the oven. Transfer to a bowl and add salt (or any seasoning you want!) while still warm.

What’s great about making your own chips is you can flavor however you want and control how healthy they turn out. You could easily use a butter flavored spray and sprinkle with cinnamon for dessert chips. NOM! Or sprinkle a little hard parmesan for cheese crisps. Better yet, leave them plain and enjoy with our black bean dip!
